IRAQ: WE NEED TO GET OUT! DO WE NEED A THREE NATION SOLUTION?
President Bush knew he was lying about Weapons of Mass Destruction when he ordered the invasion of Iraq. United Nations weapons inspectors had been scouring that country for years.
We should not have invaded Iraq. Iraq was no threat to us. Its military and Weapons of Mass Destruction capabilities had been knocked out during and after the first Gulf War, the country was in a condition of poverty and mass starvation because of UN sanctions, and Iraq had already been partitioned into “no fly zones” that were patrolled each day by British and American aircraft. Now we must eliminate Saddam and get out.
The Iraq war was planned in 1997 by the Project For a New American Century, which was made up of the same people that are now in Bush’s “inner circle”. They believe that oil for our empire must be protected with bases on the ground. We are now constructing huge permanent bases in Iraq.
In the Middle East we reap what we have sown. In 1963 our CIA installed the Ba’ath party in Iraq and popular leaders were killed. In 1953 the CIA overthrew the elected government of Iran and installed the Shah who, in turn, helped incite the Islamic Revolution. Our CIA recruited, funded and trained al Qaeda and the “jihadists” to fight the Russians in Afghanistan; then they turned on us. The Taliban in Afghanistan was funded by the USA from its early days right up to 9/11/2001.
Iraq is not a nation; it was patched together by the British in 1920 from three pieces of the defunct Ottoman Empire. If we ever leave Iraq, it may break into three parts through horrific civil war. Why not allow Iraq to negotiate its division and skip the civil war. We will not get victory, democracy, or even security if we try to force unity.
The Sunnis can’t stop fighting until they are guaranteed a fair share of the oil. The Shiites can’t wait to become the army and security forces of the new Iraq, so they can do to the Sunnis what Saddam did to them. The Kurds love the USA and will let us build all the bases we want. Peace cannot come without security, and the three peoples of Iraq will not feel secure until they each have their own police, army and prisons.
Iraq might be able to stay united, if each faction had their own security forces and the Sunnis were guaranteed a fair share of the oil. It would be hard to draw a boundary line between warring groups, but if security isn’t possible, a three nation policy may be the only way out of Iraq! More...
