REAL AMERICAN VALUES
American values are not about fighting wars and building empire. In our Declaration of Independence and Constitution you will find that they are about right and wrong, freedom and caring, and how to organize a government that will maintain liberty.
The existence of the American federal government is based on its mission to protect our liberty, not to exhort Americans with the “siren song” of trading freedom for security. We are created equal, with the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, and that is the standard we must hold to.
I believe that the Constitution contains the element of fairness, the idea that we are all in this together, when it speaks of creating a more perfect union, justice, tranquility, liberty, and general welfare. That is something more than an ethic of “grab what you can and crush the weak”. Our greatness comes from unique principles that guarantee freedom when they are respected – not from raw power alone.
It was a primary constitutional principle that the war power stay mostly with Congress, since “War is in fact the true nurse of executive aggrandizement” (Madison). Separate but equal branches of government are the main barriers to tyranny.
Another great balancing force is the separation of church and state, which allows both to prosper with far greater integrity than if they are commingled.
Only the Bill of Rights allowed the USA to become a nation. It is supposed to be the sturdy wall against which attempts at tyranny were meant to crumble; now the “wars” on drugs and terrorism have washed it mostly away. You may think you still have constitutional protections in the USA, but all your possessions and accounts could be seized tomorrow and liquidated through “civil forfeiture” – you don’t even need to be charged with a crime.
The torture, corruption, and hypocrisy we hear about every day are not American values and voters are finally fed up. We don’t want to go over to the “dark side” as Mr. Cheney suggests, we want to again be a beacon of hope for the world.
Polling proves that most American do care about fair treatment for our citizens, other nations, and our environment. Americans do want to support co-operation and development overseas.
We need unity of purpose to face the huge challenges before us; peace, jobs, health care, the environment, and economic renewal. We won’t solve our real problems by creating “wedge issues” in order to win elections by dividing Americans and creating hatred. We will create a strong and healthy nation for the future only if we face problems directly and plan how to solve them. That can happen only if we can bring our nation together, around its best constitutional and traditional values. More...
